Is it O.K. to be a Luddite?

IS IT O.K. TO BE A LUDDITE? asked Thomas Pynchon in 1984. Is it O.K. to deny the
[online] machine? To some, the internet is nothing but a series of metaphors:
the net; the web; the cloud. "It's there forever"
is the warning-come-catchcry of a creative class committed to the great, indifferent pullulation that
turns new to old with little or no savour; it's Peter Schmidt's "roomfull of shouting people."
To be heard, the answer is loud and clear. The writing is on the facebook wall.
We must whisper.
Avoid the fate of Dennis Cooper and Google's "loss" of his five-year novel (google it). Don't
disappear like all the myspace-only singles you posted.
Smash the mainframe like a knitting frame.
